Big Chair Voted Virginia's Top Main St. Treasure
The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development recently conducted a "Twenty-five Treasures on Main Street- Which is your favorite?" poll as part of their Virginia's Main Street Communities program. UpTown Martinsville's own Big Chair took first place with 1644 votes, 44% of all those polled! Lee Probst, the Executive Director of the Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association, was appreciative of all the local support, saying "we were proud to be listed this year. Then to have won the voting poll! ... The Big Chair is quickly becoming our local trademark and we are proud of it and all it represents."
The Big Chair was made by Bassett Furniture Industries to celebrate its 100th Anniversary and has become an icon of the "Deep Roots/Legacy" initiative, serving to highlight Martinsville's unique assets and rich legacies in furniture. It stands over 20 feet tall and weighs approximately 5000 lbs.
